Sometimes simple observation reveals mysteries about the nature of how things operate in the world around us. New understanding can be helpful. For example, we don’t yet understand how it works that certain animal behaviors can warn us of an approaching longer and harder winter season. Extra thick fur on cats, cows’ coats looking especially more woolly, squirrels stashing more nuts than usual, caterpillar coat colors changing. Why and how do these things happen? We don’t understand the mechanisms of all these things, but we do well to heed them and try to learn from them.
