KEELERS MEMORIAL DAY SERVICES… A perfect day with blue skies and a light breeze greeted the people ga-thered at the Keeler Cemetery for the Memorial Day Services. Guest speakers State Represent-ative Aric Nesbitt and Assistant Prosecutor for Van Buren County Mike McKay each gave an address with a bit of Me-morial Day history and a per-sonal event that touched them. A welcome and comments were presented by Allyn Anthony, Township Official; veteran sa-lute and playing taps was pre-sented by the Lawrence Ameri-can Legion Post 174; prayers presented by Associate Pastor, Scott Stambaugh of Sister Lakes Community Church; Na-tional Anthem played by the Hartford Jr.-Sr. Band. HONOR OUR HEROES… said Memorial Day Speaker Karlee Liles, Miss Watervliet and WHS Senior. She said, “We ‘re here today to honor our heroes, to remember their achievements, their courage and their dedication, and to say thank you for their sacrifices.” The Memorial Service at Watervliet Cemetery was hosted by the Watervliet VFW Post #6803 and was led by Commander Corky Openneer, the North Berrien Military Rites Team conducted the salute and taps. Duane and Kim Cobb sang the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. Chaplain John Brown led the prayer. Coloma’s Memorial day service… Mayor Jim Polashak spoke briefly at the Coloma Cemetery on Memorial Day. He spoke of gratitude for all veterans and “shadow” veterans meaning those at home supporting war efforts. Coloma American Legion Post #362 Commander Mark McKie also spoke. The subject of his speech was “Was it Worth it?” He said that only the fallen soldier can answer that question but it is up to those still here to make it worth it by making the country a better place and honoring their sacrifices.
