This week’s Tri-City Record Player of the Week for Jan. 21, 2021 is Coloma High School junior cross country runner, Ethan Vandermolen. Ethan was nominated this week by Coloma High School cross country coach Courtney Churchill, based on his outstanding season long effort, always giving his best, and because he was a leader in helping the Comet boys reach the State Finals for the first time in Coloma history.

Coach Churchill says that she does not have to spend time “coaching up” Ethan, as he knows what he needs to do to train in preparation for his events, has a positive attitude, and works to achieve his goals. Ethan has run on the cross country squad since junior high, and joins his two older sisters Emma and Abby in winning this award while competing on the cross country team.

Ethan’s parents are Luke and Cindy Vandermolen of Coloma. In addition to cross county, Ethan also plays basketball. And this spring will run on the Coloma track team, mainly because of an injury to his throwing elbow which would make playing baseball too painful to continue to pursue. Ethan also is an outstanding student in the classroom and is a member of the Coloma National Honor Society, and also is currently taking additional classes at Lake Michigan College.

Ethan ran his personal best time of 18:18 at the best possible time, at the Regionals, finishing 3rd on the team and 17th overall in giving the Comets a big lift in qualifying for the State Meet. Coach Churchill says she looks forward to having Ethan competing on the track team this spring, and also having Ethan for one more year of cross country, and hopefully help lead the Comet men run back to the State Championship next fall.

Our congratulations to Ethan for winning this award; we look forward to more great achievements from him through the remainder of his high school career, and beyond.
