Obituaries

Max Hickmott

Max’s life began December 2, 1941 in Watervliet.  He was a lifetime area resident and graduate of Benton Harbor High School. After high school Max proudly served his country in the United States Navy; US NTC San Diego 591.

Max returned to the area after serving his country and worked for Standard Oil repairing pumps.  In the early 1980’s he worked as an electrician at D.C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant as well as opening Max’s Place at two locations in Coloma where he enjoyed serving his community.  Max retired as an electrician.

Outside of work Max was a member of Electrical Union Local #153, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1570, and he served as President of Paw Paw Lake River Ventures Inc.  Max supported the Wounded Warrior Project, enjoyed growing tomato plants, watching NASCAR, attending the yearly Navy Reunions, and his most loved activity was fishing.

Max enjoyed the simple things in life especially his time with his grandchildren.  His greatest joy was his loving family which includes: his wife of 32 years Ruby; three sons John Kwon of Ocala, FL; Mark Hickmott of Decatur; Matthew Hickmott of Lakeland, FL; and daughter Jackie Launstein of Cantonment, FL; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother LeRoy Hickmott of Decatur; and many nieces and nephews.

Max died Saturday, May 14, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo surrounded by his family.  He is preceded in death by his parents Ivan and Edith (Hiler) Hickmott, four brothers Richard, Danny, Ivan, and Dee, and his sister Gloria Hickmott.

Friends visited with Max’s family Tuesday, May 17 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet where funeral services was celebrated Wednesday, May 18 at 1:00 p.m. Burial followed in North Shore Memory Gardens.

Major Patrick E. McPherson

McPherson (R), 70, of Coloma, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma. Burial followed at North Shore Memory Gardens. Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Wednesday evening. Patrick was born Feb. 18, 1946 in Kansas City, Kans. to Boyd and Doris (Knox) McPherson. After graduating from Wyandotte High School, he attended Kansas City Metro Jr. College and was active with the college band, choir, and Salvation Army Metro Band.

He and his wife Carmella were married on Feb. 15, 1969 and have worked side by side ever since. Major Pat was a Salvation Army minister for 38 years, retiring in 2009.

During that time, he was the Salvation Army National Emergency Director for 23 years; working with FEMA, NOVA and Homeland Security. He was also the founder of the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN). A special award from SATERN was to be presented to Pat next month. He was an avid ham radio operator and a Sky Warn member.

Major Pat is survived by his wife Carmella; son Sean McPherson of McHenry, Ill.; daughters Tara (Danny) Garcia of Elgin, Ill.; and Erin McPherson of Chicago, Ill.; a brother Majors Laurence (Judy) McPherson of Branson West, Mo.; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  He was preceded by his parents; brother Boyd McPherson; niece Amy Lambrecht and nephew Bradley McCanles.

Lawrence Larsen

Memorial

Lawrence Leland Larsen, 69 of Hartford, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2015.

A memorial graveside service to honor his memory will commence at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 21 at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford, with Deacon Arthur Morsaw officiating.

Military rites will be performed by the North Berrien Military Rites team. The family will greet friends following the service at the Van Buren Sportsman’s Club, Hartford.
