James was born July 27, 1938, in Benton Harbor, MI. After graduating from Benton Harbor High School he proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After returning home James went to work for Vail Rubber until retirement. Outside of work James enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, bowling, and playing softball in his younger years. James also had a passion for coaching and spent many years coaching t-ball and Salvation Army basketball. To go along with his love of sports was his love for the Detroit Lions.
James leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory including: his wife Dessie Burtchett; seven children, James Henry (Jennifer) Burtchett, David Allen (Sherry) Burtchett, Mike Jerome (Sandy) Burtchett, Angela Marie Burtchett, Aaron Wesley (Amy) Burtchett, Jennifer Susan (Jason) Mathis, and Sandy (Joe) Lambrecht; 19 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four siblings, Isabelle Burtchett, Sally Weathers, Anita “Dolly” Balow, and Henry Burtchett; and many nieces and nephews.
James died Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, at home surrounded by family. He is preceded in death by his dad James Henry Burtchett, mom Frances (Sumner) Ferrier, and step-father Wesley Sumner.
