GEORGE D. HARPER

George D. Harper, 67, of Coloma, passed away in the comfort of his own home on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024 after a brief battle with cancer.

A private Celebration of Life Service is being planned for a later date. Cremation has taken place and the burial of ashes will occur at Harris Cemetery. George was born Dec. 19, 1956 in Watervliet, MI; the son of George and Leona Harper. He was a graduate of Watervliet High School. During his career, George had been employed at the Watervliet Paper Mill for 18 years prior to its closing, and then worked at Gast Manufacturing for the next 14 years until his retirement in 2024. George was a well-known small engine and boat repair handyman in the community. His hobbies included boating, working on cars and boats, spending time with his family, listening to the “oldies”, and walking his pup Malibu.

George was a loyal, trusting, driven and hardworking person. His love for his family and grandchildren could always be felt. George was also a kind and funny individual who selflessly protected and cared for others. In short, he was simply a genuine, wholesome guy who followed his own path in life and stood true in his purpose. He was a man with a bold character and a zest for life.

George is survived by his life partner of 45 years and fiancée Beth Pope of Coloma; his stepson Ashley “AJ” Pope of Riverside; his stepdaughter Cassidy Pope of Watervliet; two brothers, John Harper of South Bend and Lyle Harper of Benton Harbor; two sisters, Vicky Rafter and Laura Harper, both of Michigan City; grandchildren Troy Gardner II, Anthony Pope and Ashley Pope; his best friend Rich Edwards of Sodus; and his beloved dog Malibu.
