Coloma boys basketball team ends calendar year with holiday victory

Last week, the Coloma Comet varsity boys basketball team played in a holiday tournament during their most recent week on the court. The men rolled into the week on a two-game winning streak, with five wins in their first seven contests.

For this game, the team traveled to Bangor as well on Friday, Dec. 27, to participate in the Bangor Holiday Shootout, to contest a matchup with the host squad. The Comets were looking to finish the calendar year with their sixth win of the season, but would need a solid team performance to achieve that task. Standing in their way were the Vikings, who have had a sluggish start to the campaign, entering the night with just one victory in their first five games. Without one of their leading scorers on the floor for Coloma, other players would need to pick up the slack, which they accomplished when they left the gymnasium with a victory, 62-33.

The Comets were in control for most of the evening, using the first three quarters to build their final winning margin. Coloma led after the opening eight minutes of action, 18-9, before their lead swelled at the half, to 34-16, thanks to a 16-7 scoring burst in the second quarter. In the second half, Coloma outscored Bangor, 15-4, in the third quarter, building their lead to 49-20. The fourth quarter saw both teams fight to a draw on the scoreboard, 13-13.

Tyrell Taylor-Owens led all Coloma scorers, with 24 points, while Kameron Baker joined him in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Other players scoring for the Comets were RJ Allen (9), AJ Moore (8), Cole Hartmann (3), Carson Ashley (2), Cole Brown (2), Dylan Groendyk (2) and Ryan Schroeder (2).
