Coloma Press Box

DEFENSIVE LINE HEAT… In their recent game at Delton Kellogg, Coloma’s Joe Clayton (63) and Jaymes Phillips (99) chases the quarterback out of the pocket, looking to bring him down for the sack. Clayton, Phillips and their defensive counterparts all played a vital role in holding the Panthers to just six points, as the Comets would pick up the victory, 44-6. (TCR photo by Jerrod Birmele)

Football team scores final 44 points to knock out Delton Kellogg

Last week, the Coloma Comet varsity football team played on Friday, Oct. 4 at Delton Kellogg. The team was tasked with attempting to “right the ship” against the host Panthers, trying to get their second win of the campaign, first divisional victory and ruin their opponent’s homecoming celebration. These two teams had played each other on nine previous occasions, with Delton Kellogg winning five of those games, so no one had a statistical edge.

With the Comets entering the night with a 1-4 record, and the Panthers owning a 2-3 record, it was an opportune time for Coloma to change their fortunes and get back to their winning ways, all while tying the overall series at five wins-a-piece. After falling behind early, the Comets dominated, scoring the final forty-four points, turning the deficit into a rout, as they won, 44-6.

In the first quarter, Delton Kellogg drove down the field on their opening possession, scoring on a 7-yard touchdown run, to kick off the scoring. They attempted the two-point conversion, and failed, giving them the lead, 6-0. Little did anyone know that those would be the only points the Panthers would score on this night.
